Accelerated Learning

There are several different learning methods that people use to help them learn and remember what they’ve learned. Most of us are familiar with the note-taking method of learning. By taking notes as you read material or listen to a speaker you are actually calling attention to the material twice. The point of accelerated or enhanced learning is to make the information more accessible to the brain. This is done through repetition and reinforcement. The more we hear something—the more we are exposed to something—the more our brain remembers it.

Most successful methods of accelerated learning implement repetition and reinforcement in their style. Think of how easily small children learn new information. It is often taught to them through the use of easy-to-remember jingles and songs. In addition to learning the information presented, such as the alphabet, they are learning to associate it with the tune of the song. This makes it easier for the brain to recall the information when the music is played or hummed.

This method is also used for the teaching of new languages. By creating word associations, the brain makes new triggers to activate the new knowledge. It is much easier to learn a new language by using pictures as word association objects than to simply try to memorize the meanings. There are many language programs that are now designed as computer or video games. By interacting with the game with more of your senses involved, the brain receives more signals to create a knowledge base with the new information. The more references the brain can use in identifying a piece of information, the easier the information is to recall. For example, you might be introduced to a new person and be expected to recall the person’s name at a later date. It helps if you give your brain some identifying information about the person to go along with the name such as tall, black hair, wears glasses, and so on. The more information you give your brain about this person the easier it is for the brain to recall the name when you see the person again.

Another method of accelerated learning is through the use of flash cards. Using flash cards while speaking out the word or piece of information engages your auditory sense with your visual sense, so the brain receives the information twice.

Another successful method is subliminal messaging. The brain can receive information on all levels of consciousness. Many teachers and professionals in the field of self-help and self-improvement have found subliminal messaging to be an effective way to accelerate a learning procedure. Subliminal learning can be done while the individual is in a fully conscious state or a semi-conscious one. Often subliminal tapes are recorded with sounds or music on the conscious level and the messages or information recorded at a lower, sub-conscious level. This helps the brain to relax into a state where it is more receptive to new ideas and information. These types of techniques have proven extremely successful in helping people who want to quit smoking and lose weight.

While the methods of accelerated learning may be varied, the results of the effects have more than proven themselves to be positive.
