Teaching Adult Learners
Adult learners, sometimes referred to as non-traditional students, are different than the average age college student. Therefore when designing and teaching a course or workshop for adult learners, instructors need to understand the general characteristics that define this population. Typically adult learners are problem-centered in their thinking. They seek educational solutions to reach specific goals. They look at where they are compared to where they want to be in their life, career, etc. They are results-oriented as they have specific goals in mind and if they do not think they will be able to achieve those goals, they will seek them elsewhere. Adult learners are self-directed, as they are not dependent on others for direction. Their lives have given them much experience in responsibility and independence.
