WHY SCIENCE IS IMPORTANT
In the educational system lately, much emphasis has been placed on raising math and reading scores, and rightly so. If a student cannot read, he certainly will not succeed to any great degree in today’s world. Likewise, if a student cannot do basic math functions, he will also be handicapped in the adult world, both in business and in personal life. Lately there has been a surge in importance placed on writing. Certainly a student needs to be able to express basic thoughts in a clear and understandable manner using standard grammar; however, most students will not write creatively for a living. One subject has suffered from a gross lack of emphasis, and that subject is science. Science is extremely important in our world today. Technology, medicine, the protection of the environment, forensics, and most new discoveries and inventions all involve science. Yet science does not always receive the attention it deserves in today’s schools.

Pattern Recognition

With the advancement of science, new technologies have been emerging day by day. Pattern recognition is one such technology that has been serving multiple needs for today’s world in the areas of artificial intelligence, neural networks, cognitive science, biological research, and much more. Though studies and research were done about this technology long ago, the implementation took some years, since the use of this technology needed a proper system to work with. Now, with the development of many machines and devices that could make use of this pattern recognition, one can come across this technology in day to day life. For example, x-rays, which we are familiar with, use pattern recognition, and MRIs and ultrasound images also use this technology for identifying the disease patterns.

Science and Children

Confronted with dense, dull textbooks that present formulaic information in a disconnected, abstract way, many children immediately shut down. Without even thinking about it, they label science as something apart from them, at best a school subject they should excel in and at worst a boring hour they spend staring at the wall. Science does not have to be this way. By introducing more hands-on learning methods into our classrooms, we can bring science alive for children from kindergarten to eighth grade and ensure that it plays a continuing role in their futures.
