Basic Reading Skills
In the previous article we mentioned that you might want to read slow if you are reading for enjoyment. When you are reading for enjoyment, you don’t really care how much you remember of the book. You are reading because it is fun. You are reading in much the same way you would watch television. When you read to learn, you are reading for a purpose. The basic problem most people have is that they don’t know the difference.
The basic reading skill all students need is the skill of “Active Reading.” Active reading gives you a purpose. It helps you ask questions as you read and, as a result, you learn more.
Therefore, the very first thing you should do when you start to read a book is to get familiar with it. This involves at least three steps.

Why Read Fast
Before I address this question directly, let’s get at the other side of this question which has nothing to do with comprehension. When should you not speed read?
Here are a few occasions when you might choose to read at a rather normal pace:
- When you are reading for enjoyment.
- When you are reading something that requires that you hear the words to fully enjoy what you are reading. Examples of this type of reading include poetry and jokes.

Can Software REALLY Help you Read Faster and Better?
Some time last year, I picked up a copy of a software program that would help me read faster. Having so many choices available to me, made the choice pretty difficult but in the end I choose a product called RocketReader, a Windows™ program that really has helped both my daughter and me read faster.
Why I choose the Software I did
One of the things that led me to choose Rocket Reader over some of the other software that is available is the fact that they have a web based demo and a fourteen day trial. During the fourteen day trial both of us were able to notice an improvement in our speed. I went from 250wpm to about 300wpm and my daughter went from 300wpm to about 400wpm.
