Cognitive learning theory goes back centuries in psychological studies. Cognitive behavior studies discover how the mind learns knowledge or behaviors and processes the information efficiently to free up the short-term memory, much like a computer that stores information to the hard drive. The theory is based on whether certain information is corrupted when stored, and how the mind integrates and retrieves the information, which might be lacking parts of the knowledge.
Cognitive learning theory can be a kind of introspection, as in cognitive behavior therapy, which helps you stop a bad habit or deal with a phobia. A therapist will have you introspect concerning why you think or behave a certain way. Cognitive learning theory can apply to phobias, such as being afraid of spiders, because the way you learned about them and stored the information for later use.
Understanding cognitive learning theory isn’t difficult when you look at it this way. You might learn bad or inappropriate behaviors if your mind only stores a certain part of a learning experience, but is missing parts of it. For example, a phobia can be learned when you are a young child. Your perception of a spider might have come from a spider bite or listening to your mother scream when she saw one, even though the spider was harmless.
In this example, cognitive learning theory would say that you are afraid because your mind remembered pain and fear from a spider, but the situation is out of proportion because you were young and lacking part of the information, such as the fact that few spiders are poisonous or life threatening.
When it comes to cognitive learning theory, you can use introspection to find things you know and analyze whether they were stored accurately and completely in your long-term memory or whether they contain corrupted information.
