Developing Effective Study Skills

arct-076 Developing effective study skills is a problem most children and teens encounter. It is often repeated in schools that students must have good study skills to get ahead. A lot of students don’t consider themselves to have study skills or even know what they are. There are a lot of materials and seminars that are provided to help an individual develop these skills. If you go to the Internet and bookstores, there are literally thousands of books and articles that indicate how one can develop such skills.

So what are study skills and how do they become effective?

Study skills are the tools and methods used by an individual to retain information and gain understanding. These tools and methods become effective depending on the individual using them. Often self-discipline plays a vital role in building these skills and making them effective.

Some tips on developing your study skills

Developing effective study skills are not difficult. When you are in the process of studying there are a few things you can do to make studying more effective.

  • Manage your time.
Time management is vital to studying; it prevents cramming and stress. One must learn to plan the entire day and stick to the plan that was set. Don’t procrastinate. Things you can do today must be done so you don’t end up forgetting them. Set an appropriate time for recreation and a time for studying.
  • Set your priorities.
When you have a lot of things to study for, make a to-do list. This will allow you to make sure you have done everything. List down all the important things that you have to do. By doing this you will be able to successfully organize your schedule.
  • Set your goals.
Don’t try to do everything at once. Be sure you are realistic with your time frames. You may be trying to cram a lot of things into a very small amount of time, causing you stress, which is not going to help. Don’t bite off more than you can chew. Be sure your goals are attainable and once you’ve finished these goals in the given time you can then start new ones. You may also want to give yourself a reward after completing your goals. This will motivate you to work faster.
  • Take notes as much as possible.
When you are studying, remember to take notes. This will allow you to remember important topics and ideas about what you are studying. It will also save you time in the future when you need to review what you have learned.

These are just some recommendations to develop your study skills. Remember that studying takes time and you need to make time for it. Give yourself ample time to retain all the information you need.

Take small breaks. Learn to discipline yourself by following your study plan. No one else can do your studying for you, so you should find ways to make it an easier, faster, and more enjoyable activity.
