The terms early childhood education, kindergarten, early education, or preschool are used interchangeably to mean formal education that is received from three to six years old. This kind of education often focuses on children learning through play, and may be provided by an academic institution or daycare providers. This formal schooling supplements parentally supervised learning and interaction.
In a study punished on August 2009, entitled “Benefits of early childhood interventions across the world: (Under) Investing in the very young,” Nores and Barnett compared the early-education systems of twenty-three countries in Latin America, Asia, Africa, and Europe who use approximately thirty different approaches. They were able to group them by country, subpopulations, duration and amount of education, and types of education. They concluded that all children despite the type of curriculum provided had encouraging results with regards to normal development. They also gained 5 points in IQ tests. Children who were enrolled early gained health advancements, behavior development, and intellectual benefits. The advantages were maintained until adulthood.
Aside from the cognitive and social benefits a child acquires in early education, the long-term effects of it cannot be denied. Studies show that people who were enrolled in an early education program fare better in future academic endeavors. They are less likely to repeat or sign up for a special class. They are also more likely to be law-abiding citizens as they are exposed to structure early on. Having a good education and a good social background enables one to eventually attain a better job, which is the goal of all parents for their children.
Here are a few examples of various educational programs that are being implemented by the government. Established by the No Child Left Behind Act, the Early Reading First program provides incentives and subsidy by the government to create and manage institutions for children who come from lower-income homes. The Special Education Preschool Grants and State Grants curriculum gives children of different abilities the right to have easy access to early childhood special education. The Special Education Grants for Infants and Families initiative provides an early intervention program (EIP) to disabled children from birth to 24 months.
Even with the benefits of an early childhood program, some parents hesitate to enroll their children because of the following: preschool can be costlier than a college education, single parents cannot afford the cost, or parents are simply not aware of the benefits. If parents are not aware, they may see early education as play time, which can be substituted by peer interaction or which is only an option and not a need. To sum it all up, parents should be more aware of the potential benefits of an early childhood education program and find a school that will best suit their needs and budget.
