Education Technology

Ever since humans started teaching and learning from others, different techniques have begun to appear. As early as the prehistoric age, the first technique came to be: imitation. When a rudimentary language developed in the form of growls, grunts, and signals, primitive men were for the first time able to communicate with one another, learn from each other and teach each other as well. Learning was and still is a matter of survival, and education is an important part of every person’s life.

A person can be educated in many ways: home schooling, regular schooling, and boarding schools, which all developed from the Greek concept of teacher (master) and pupils (disciples).

Modern education as we know it has been rethinking its methods, tools, goals, and ideology. A long time has passed since the days when only the aristocracy had access to knowledge as a way to perpetuate their status. Nowadays, education is supposed to be universal, so that not just the rich enjoy the advantages of learning.

Education tries to keep up with technology; things that would have been incredible to the ancient Greeks are happening today before our eyes. Now we use calculators with the pi number already set in them, and we can solve complex mathematical problems with the help of predefined trigonometric functions. Scientific calculators make it quite easy to work with equations, arrays, and other things related to calculus. Nevertheless, students should not rely solely on these devices, since nothing can replace human judgment. Computers can perform complicated calculations, but it’s the human being pressing the keys and instructing the device what to do.

The amount of things to learn is ever increasing, specialization is a must, and there are countless fields to devote to. Are human beings prepared to process so many topics? Since Gutenberg’s invention that allowed mass printing of books, other inventions and devices have been incorporated into everyday education. Television has also helped in this modern revolution in education by airing documentaries, debates, and other information useful for students. VHS and its successors, CDs and DVDs, have been another important improvement, since they allow libraries and teachers to get hold of these programs and make them available at any moment. Projectors help teachers turn otherwise boring topics into dynamic experiences, and computers hold a lot of information on their hard drives. With the magic of the internet, access to knowledge is at the tip of your fingers (or, should we say, at a click of your mouse), and students can benefit from research, papers, and debates conducted and uploaded to websites from anywhere in the planet. And it doesn’t stop here—new technologies can be and are actually applied to education: from recording entire lectures with digital recorders or even cell phones to acquiring specific software for different fields, reading e-books (or listening to audio books), following video tutorials, and creating projects with people living thousands of miles away.
