Educational Technology

Educational technology can refer to any technology that can assist students’ learning processes. The term “technology” in this phrase can refer to any number of items ranging from actual physical objects such as overhead projectors and laptop computers to intangible items such as computer games, educational software, and distance learning, and the students impacted by this technology can range from pre-school through college-age students.
For decades now, technology has been changing the ways in which students learn and the methods by which teachers instruct them. Distance learning, a situation in which the students are able to learn from the educators without being physically present in the classroom, has become more common over the last few years and is now a generally accepted method of receiving an education and even a degree. Distance learning has allowed a larger number of people to become students or to continue their education. Even students who are not receiving their degrees remotely have been impacted by technology as it has made course materials easier and more convenient to access via school websites, allowing students to access class information at their convenience.
Technology allows tests and assessments to be taken online, which allows for immediate feedback and correction of incorrect answers. Since the computer is impartial and provides only feedback specific to the questions asked, students can be motivated to continue with their learning. Even very young children are exposed to educational technology in the form of video games they play, which have become more and more slanted toward educational topics. Audiences of educational games range from pre-school through college-level students. As young children grow and continue with their educational pursuits, they are impacted by the ease and convenience of writing using word processing programs, which can automatically and immediately correct spelling and grammatical errors.
Classrooms from college level to elementary level use technology in the classroom. Most schools have overhead projectors, calculators, or computers in the classroom or at least accessible to students somewhere in the school. Often classes have classroom websites or blogs. These allow students and instructors to post students’ class work, homework assignments, and web links to educational sites that compliment the lessons being taught in the classroom as well as allowing students and teachers to post comments, journal entries, or ideas that reinforce the current class lessons.
Although educational technology has certainly changed the face of education as far as access, ease of use, and the familiarity students have with certain educational topics, there are certain limits such as the limited access of students in some, usually poorer or rural, areas. The initial set up for many of the technologies discussed in this article can be time consuming as well as expensive and quickly outmoded, but overall the benefits of educational technologies outweigh the costs.
