Effective Study Skills

When studying, the quality of the studying is just as important as its quantity. In fact, one could argue that it’s even more important. Using the right techniques, it’s possible to accomplish the same amount of studying in half the time! Here are some study skills to master that can make your study session truly effective:
1. Use SQRW
Is it enough to simply read textbook chapters and then expect to absorb everything? Not really. SQRW is one of the most effective ways to read textbook chapters and to take notes from them. Here are the four steps of the acronym:
- SURVEY: This helps you to get the essence of a chapter. Read the title, sub-headings, introduction, and conclusion. This will give you an idea of what the chapter is about and what new information you’ll learn from it.
- QUESTION: Questions are important so you’ll have a reason for reading the chapter and will be able to stay focused on it. You can do this by asking a basic question for each sub-heading in the chapter. This step will help you to maximize how much you learn from the reading.
- READ: Read the information after each sub-heading to answer the questions that you previously created about them. You may need to split up the question into sub-questions, or even change the entire question. However, make sure to keep asking questions to make it easier to find answers.
- WRITE: Using a notebook, record each question that you ask and its corresponding answer. Afterwards, read each answer again to verify that it contains all of the essential data to answer the question.
2. Study with flashcards
Flashcards are an “oldie but goodie” when it comes to studying. It’s important to create an organized system for using them to further make your studying more effective. Whether you’re learning your multiplication tables or the names of enzymes, the use of flashcards remains a simple and effective method. Make sure that that the container you use for your cards includes dividers. Also, use a marker to write information onto the cards so they’re easier to read. Flashcards not only help to make your studying more organized, but they make it more mobile as well!
3. Take good notes during lectures and when reading textbooks
This will help you later when you need to prepare for quizzes and exams. When taking notes during lectures, one of the biggest challenges is keeping up with the speaker. One option is to tape record the lecture and then play it back later, in order to transcribe it. Another option is to learn shorthand, helping you to write virtually as fast as the teacher is speaking. Finally, to make reviewing your notes easier, it’s highly advisable that you either type the notes directly onto a computer or transfer your chicken scratch to a computer file.
Well, there you have it! These three simple tips can help you to learn better, regardless of whether you’re earning an elementary school or PhD diploma. You can find more helpful tips here.
