Foods To Improve Memory
Have you been in a situation where you noticed a decrease in your ability to remember things? You find it hard to remember people’s names efficiently, you may wonder where you put your things, you easily forget what you studied before taking exams, or at times, you may find it hard to learn new vocabulary. Well, you are in a situation where you need help in order for you to remember detailed and structured information.
You don’t have to fret because you can actually do simple things to help improve your memory. Instead of taking in drugs for a treatment, you can use your diet to improve your memory.
Here are some of the foods that can enhance brain functions:
* Foods that contain nutrients such as folic acid and B vitamins
These nutrients, especially vitamins B6 and B12, can help protect our brain’s neurons by breaking down an amino acid called homocysteine, which is found to be toxic to the nerve cells. They can also aid in the production of red blood cells, which are the carriers of oxygen.
You can find these nutrients in foods like soybeans, spinach, legumes, strawberries, broccoli, asparagus, citrus fruits, melons, and black beans.
* Foods that contain antioxidants
Antioxidants such as beta-carotene and vitamins C and E help fight free radicals in our body. It can also help improve oxygen flow in our body as well as in our brain. The benefits of antioxidants are not only associated with fighting cancer and taking a role in certain heart diseases, but having them as staples in our daily diet can aid in improving memory function.
Some antioxidant-rich foods that are readily available are carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach, citrus fruits, blueberries, red tomatoes, nuts and seeds, liver and broccoli. One of the most widely used and most popular sources with antioxidant effects is green tea. Green tea is an excellent source of antioxidants and has lots of other benefits that reach way beyond boosting the memory.
* Foods that contain Omega-3 fatty acids
These kinds of fatty acids are associated with improving cognitive functions such as our memories. They are concentrated in our brain and are said to be the “good or healthy” fats.
Best food sources that are high in Omega-3 fatty acids are flaxseed and flaxseed oil, walnuts and walnut oil and cold-water fishes such as halibut, mackerel, tuna, and herring.
Our minds are no different from the rest of our bodies. Eating foods that are rich in certain nutrients can aid in alleviating brain fog and boost our memories. It naturally goes that since our body is fueled by nutritious foods that we eat, feeding our brain in the same way follows suit.
There’s actually no need to resort to medications if you start to show signs of memory loss. All you have to do is to know the right combinations of foods, a healthy lifestyle and you can start enjoying life with improved memory.
