Foundation Stage Curriculum

The very idea of Foundation Stage Curriculum is based upon the philosophy that learning is not spontaneous. In fact it should be properly planned and structured in a particular way so that there is special emphasis upon activities that are not just educating and motivating but are fun for every child. Therefore the people engaged in delivering the Foundation Stage curriculum focus on providing children with a mode of learning through planned play.
The curriculum also tries to extend and develop the spontaneous play of children as a means of motivating learning and reinforces the support for early stages of learning and development. This curriculum is aimed at providing the practitioner with knowledge of child development, observation, and assessment for learning. It should also help the practitioner get a fair idea of what the child is learning, where he/she is in his/her learning, and how he/she needs to progress in the right way.
However, such strategies that are used in learning as well as teaching should not be fixed. The strategies should be kept dynamic so that they can be adjusted to suit the needs of each child and the very objective of learning, which might be different in different cases. The practitioners can begin by testing the children for their learning styles and prepare a framework for the type of learning that would be better suited to them. This would not only help them to come up with a better learning technique but also make the process of learning more fun for the children.
Teaching in the early years would effectively mean systematically helping children to learn in a way that they are helped to make connections in their learning and move forward in an active way. It also helps them in reflecting upon what they have learned. The scheme also involves holding interactive sessions with the children where the children are allowed to express their views on things they are learning as well as their problems with the way of learning. The practitioners are also trained to incorporate the views of the children into their teaching method.
This method of teaching could be implemented for higher classes as well but the problem with higher classes is that the method of teaching is focused upon making the child learn particular areas of study without taking into account their learning styles or capabilities. This often leads to poor results for a lot of children, who are forcibly taught in almost a language that is alien to their mode of understanding.
It is also worth noting that the courses in higher classes are structured in a way that they exclude all kinds of fun activities and the students are left behind with drab classroom assignments and homework. However, this scheme of things can’t be expected to work well at the foundational level where the child has just started developing interest in learning and has to be taught in a more friendly way.
