Games to Improve Your Memory
The average person can remember four things at a time. Beyond that, he becomes extraordinary like those autistic savants who can remember all places in the globe or calculate cube roots faster than a calculator without any conscious effort.
An average person’s goal is to improve his short-term memory to help him remember faces and names and achieve an outstanding academic track record. If your memory constantly slips and is becoming a nuisance, you can rely on fun techniques to help jog your memory cells.
Games and Songs
A technique to help students learn is involving them in games and teaching them songs with repetitive lines. Songs that spell out words and games that sharpen their memory retention are effective methods to hasten and improve learning. Games as brain training techniques involve the verbal, auditory, visual and spatial memory, and contribute to faster brain training.
When a person is engrossed in a brain game, the activity involves the prefrontal cortex, parietal cortex, and basal ganglia, which receive stimuli from the eyes, ears, and sense of touch. Hence, brain games are more effective if these involve these senses. Once focused on a visual brain game, such as the As Hard as a Goat’s Knee and remember faces, the brain cells are jogged to work hard at remembering details.
Another memory game that can get your adrenalin going is the memory improvement game that is timed to test your performance in a matter of seconds. The more you play this brain game, the more your brain strives to work faster.
The Importance of Brain Games in Teaching
One’s memory is not always perfect. Stress and problems can make matters worse. Remember those lapses when you forget where you placed your shoes, or you cannot remember the name of your neighbor when you meet her on the subway? Just when she says goodbye and turns her back you remember her name! This is no laughing matter – this can be embarrassing.
Memory lapses are not for seniors only. These can occur to young people and children and in some cases progress quickly. But when the brain is always exercised, it “learns” tricks to retain memory.
According to Dr. E. Goldberg of the NYU School of medicine and Dr. G. Cohen of George Washington University, brain exercises are just as important as physical exercises. Brain games help a lot to improve memory, hence their importance as a teaching tool.
Involving young schoolchildren in memory games or flash cards aids their cognitive and spatial capabilities. They feel no pressure to memorize details but enjoy the experience and learn their ABCs and numbers faster. Memory games boost the child’s learning capacity and the ability to absorb new information.
If you want to help your children or teens to improve their memory, try the Nintendo Brain Age 2 – a simple game of math coupled with memory exercises. You can use this, too, to keep your brain’s memory capacity in top form.
If your memory’s a bit rusty or if you need to stimulate your child’s learning, try these hot brain games and keep your brain going.
