Importance of College Education
Life is never and will never be easy. Extra effort must be made in order to become a better person out of it, rising to the top and being the best that you can be. And it is this universal fact that differentiates the winners and losers in life. Even the richest, most popular, and most influential individuals wind up as losers if they do not maximize what they already have, while even people from humble backgrounds can find what they seek when they look hard enough. And a college education allows people to do just that.
Job Proficiency
Early schooling allows a person to grasp the basics of knowledge, but a college education makes full use of these basics, distilling them into a specific field of knowledge that yields the driven student to excel in a particular field of interest.
Experts and teachers have had practical experience with their respective fields, and they are taught to transmit this information to their students. By a combination of pedagogical or instructional methods and a hands-on approach with multiple case analyses, the skills required to be productive and efficient in a particular job are engrained within the person.
Once students have gained this specific, technical knowledge, they are then empowered to choose their course in life. They are taught practical skills that will help them get through life, and the rewards of these teachings are as extensive as the student’s desire to apply them.
Improving Social Skills
A college education is not just about job proficiency, though: learning how to be involved in society is one other unique aspect that college brings into the life of individuals. Learning how to work with colleagues and deal with similar social issues is another benefit gained from a college education. Brash and arrogant, cold and aloof, quiet and soft spoken, Machiavellian and manipulative, warm and friendly—a school setting exposes a person to all these types of people.
This exposure then helps a student learn to cope and live with this colorful array of personalities, learning how to deal with them in the process, for the world of work is not kind to people who cannot cultivate people skills. College allows for mistakes to be made, while a professional institution may not look so favorably on such social blunders.
Personal Development
Perhaps one of the most important benefits of a college education is the personal development it offers to an individual. Confidence builds up as the student gains more and more professional knowledge about his or her chosen degree, fanning the flames of the person’s desire to become better and more competent. This desire then paves the way for the student’s drive to excel and perform when the time should come that his or her skills will be needed.
Professional competence, social aptitude and a wider understanding of both oneself and the world one lives in are just some of the perks that a student gains when exposed to the higher educational system. So when somebody says you don’t need a degree to be successful in life, just tell him that it helps a lot more than simply bumming around.
