If only our brains were computers then we would not need to worry about how fast and how well we could memorize lists and series of important information. All we would need is a chip or a new program to improve the way we acquire knowledge and speed up the process of retrieving information from our memory. But improving memory skills is actually tough work. It requires effort and time to achieve.

Memory refers to man’s capacity to remember. It is a mental process that recalls previously learned information, experiences or skills. It covers a number of complex processes that involve many different parts of the brain. There are actually two types of memory: the short-term and the long-term memory. Short-term memory refers to the ability of the mind to store information and retain that information for only a few seconds or minutes. An example of this situation is when you are comparing the prices of the products of different brands. This type of memory is fragile. On the other hand, long-term memory typically requires more effort to retain meaningful information. The types of long-term memory include episodic memories, semantic memories and procedural memory.

So how exactly do you make an effort to improve memory skills?

Similar to the physical aspects of the body, doing mental exercises promotes mental fitness. Mental fitness is a crucial aspect of the effectiveness of the techniques used to improve memory skills. As physical exercises flex body muscles, doing mental exercises cultivates a sharp memory. Most mental exercises typically aim to increase the brain’s memorization and retrieval capacity.  Increasing the capacity to remember is the main objective of mental exercises. Here are some of the techniques that can help improve memory skills:

• As you make an effort to remember, you need to know that the brain retains meaning, value and relevance more than plain sequences of titles, codes or names. Hence, memorizing things will be easier if you are aware of the meaning of each of the items as well as their relevance in life. Also, attitude influences the process of memorization and affects how well or how fast the brain retains and retrieves information. Memorizing items is easier to do if the person has some basic knowledge or background on the information being processed.

• To easily remember things, it is important to control the amount and form of the information. Determine which information is important. Processing more important information over less important information facilitates meaningful organization of information. This way, details, meanings and items can easily be embedded in the mind.

• Strengthening neural connections through recitation, visualization and association involves all the body senses in processing information.

• Observing time to solidify pathways basically appeals to how well the brain retains information through consolidation and distributed practice. A classic example of this technique is taking down notes.

Every piece of information that our brain processes is delivered via the body senses; we feel it, see it and read it before it goes into the brain and before it is stored in the memory. The brain processes information through different stages: association, memory review, organization and recall. To effectively improve memory skills, do some mental exercises and memory techniques that specifically target the increase in the brain’s capacity to receive, store and retrieve information, which is very much like what a computer chip does in tweaking the computer’s information processing capacity.
