Instructional Design Theory

There are three essential components to successful learning; the instructional design theory, learning object taxonomy  and the prescriptive learning material. Of the three components, the instructional design theory provides the structure and criteria in which various learning objects and prescriptive learning materials can successfully achieve learning goals. It provides a system of learning that is flexible and personalized. But while this concept is initially identified with the conventional classroom learning setup, this concept of learning is now predominantly viewed in its technological perspective.

The integration of technology into educational settings has brought a number of modern teaching and learning tools to the traditional classroom setup. These tools include computers, the internet, and various forms of digital media such as audio-video players and LCD projectors. Given the vast information that they offer, they emphasize the necessity of an instructional design. These modern instructional or educational tools need to follow a structure in which their applications will be better suited for educational purposes. An instructional design will ensure that such applications will strictly follow the guidelines as well as the federal and state standards for human-computer interaction.

The instructional design is simply a creative pattern in which an item will be processed or created. It is what makes something unique, effective and practical. When talking about education, it is what provides an order to the events that facilitate learning. It provides a structure or pattern in which knowledge, observation, and creativity will be put toward situations so that learning opportunities will be enhanced. The very purpose of having an instructional design is to carefully plan an effective and systematic way in which learning tools will be used more effectively in conveying the meaning and concepts of models and applications of the subjects discussed inside the classroom.

The instructional design theory, with respect to the integration of technology in the classroom, is what justifies the students’ or learners’ benefits from the use of modern teaching tools. It simply provides the framework in which various methods of instruction can formulate more effective and flexible learning strategies. It supports a principled way of learning, as this theory dictates the ethical use of modern teaching tools in line with the set guidelines and standard rules of applications.

The beauty of instructional design theory lies in the simple meaning of the word “design.” It simply means a plan of action. It is a discipline that derives inspiration from the contents of areas such as communication, psychology, and media to present a systematic process of understanding the nature of learning among students. Guided by that knowledge, the theory outlines a detailed specification in which modern teaching tools as well as technology can enhance learning experiences. This outline provides instructions for those tools to be used in empowering students to become active participants in the learning process.

The influences of other learning theories are evident in the instructional design theory. As it presents a logical development in learning from instructions, it helps optimize learning outcomes. Learning theories actually provide the backbone of any instructional design. But while learning theories provide concepts to effective learning strategies, it is the instructional design theory that actually manifests, articulates, and brings those useful instructional concepts to actual use. Hence, the presence of an instructional design guarantees the learning advantage promised by modern teaching tools.
