Instructional System Design

The word “system,” for many people, brings about thoughts of mega-methodologies that necessitate intense training sessions and cabinets full of books. However, the fact is that Instructions System Design (ISD) is not all that hard. It was designed to get to the bottom of human performance problems (U.S. Department of Defense, 1975).

The familiar practices for analyzing the training methods in educational and business facilities are CRI (Criterion Referenced Instruction) and PBT (Performance Based Training) . Now Instructional System Design has found its own place amongst these traditional methods. However, there are a few common factors in all of these systematic approaches. These include competency-based training with the learners so they gain knowledge of the necessary skills that will help them to progress in the performance of their tasks. In addition to this, making sure that all the information is presented in the correct order during the lessons is one of the most important criteria for training sessions.

A methodical tracking system needs to be implemented so that updates and changes in teaching and learning methods and systems can be analyzed and changed whenever necessary. This will make a major difference in the final performance of both the instructor and the trainee in matters of imparting knowledge and in the assimilation of that knowledge.

Evaluation of accumulated data that has been collected through different data collection methods needs to be done on a regular basis. This helps to ensure that there is proper maintenance and improvement in the training technique, which will be reflected in the present condition and status of each training program. Instructional System Design will provide you with all the information for making the final decision as far as the who, what, when, how, and where of a training program. This system design is based on a systematic and methodical process for pulling information together to analyze individual and team performance requirements, the end result being the ability to respond to identified training needs.

This systematic approach will ensure that implemented learning programs and the support materials are developed in an efficient and effective manner. The final goal is to stay one step ahead of the technical requirements necessary in a constantly changing environment and keep abreast with all the necessary developments needed to match the requirements demanded by such changes.

Instructional System Design is also called SAT, which means Systematic Approach to Training. You can also find it under the name of ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implement, Evaluate). You will find that most learning design methods use the ADDIE approach and models in their learning programs.

Instructional system design means that the environment of the performance situation is analyzed and the required goals set out carefully so that any performance and efficiency can be corrected at the end of the training period. A logical and systematic process to achieve those particular goals is then developed. This includes the designing of proper courseware that will be implemented in the training sessions by the instructors. The achievement or non-achievement of the goal has to be periodically evaluated, with the participation of the performers, so that proper modifications can be made, if necessary, in the future courseware.
