Learning Language

Learning a new language has always been considered a challenging task. The difficulty lies not just in picking up new words but also in picking up correct grammatical usages. The intricacies of language vary starkly as one moves from occidental languages to oriental languages. Not to mention the myriad scripts that are prevalent today in various languages like English, Russian, Arabic, Cantonese, Korean, Japanese, Hindi, etc. It would be worth mentioning that India alone is home to over 1000 languages and an equally large number of scripts.

People have various reasons to learn a new language. Some may want to learn it for business purposes such as seeking international assignments, seeking a job as a translator, as a tool to understand various religious scriptures, and for short trips to other foreign countries. Yet there are others who may just want to learn a new language as a hobby.

There are several online books (e-books) available free of cost for learning a new language. Books are available for beginners, intermediate learners, and advanced learners. There is also a host of self learning audio kits available over the internet. The best advantage of having such resources is that one can learn at one’s own pace. This would be highly suitable to busy professionals.

Although some people prefer self study, the best way to learn a foreign language is to enroll oneself in a good language training institute, preferably one set up or recommended by a foreign consulate. This will ensure that a pupil is in the hands of well-trained professionals who can aid easy learning. Also, trained teachers will ensure that a student is put through various learning aids such as word games, crosswords, puzzles, and pictograms, which make learning interesting. They can also teach using modern audio-visual aids such as short movies or recorded spoken conversations, which will help students grasp the nuances of the language quickly.

While trying to learn a new language nothing will help more than practice. Try to make friends who are learning the same language. Such groups of common interest can assist each other in learning the language faster. Regular usage will help the group measure their proficiency and thus inform them of their weakness.

A student should develop keen interest in reading literature available in the language such as newspapers, novels, and short stories. Keep in mind that colloquial language may vary from place to place, but written language is usually standard across geographical locations. Avoid reading through blogs and online posts with an aim to learn a new language as the language used is informal and has greater tendency of being error prone.

It is important that students pay special attention to phonetics. Not all sounds are captured by the English language. For instance there are two “ha” sounds in Arabic—one is subtle like the “ha” as in happy, while the other is more intense and its “ha” pronunciation is more like blowing air over glass.
