Learning Methods

There are a variety of different learning methods because people absorb information differently based on their own experiences, strengths, and weaknesses. Examples of different learning styles include visual, auditory, and tactile. Learners can also be divided into groups—global or analytic.

Some people are visual learners, which means they best absorb information by seeing it. These people benefit from taking notes in a classroom, for instance, because they can then have the visual information on their paper. When learning information, it is very important that they have the book or notes in front of them so they can fully synthesize what is being presented. Visual learners enjoy pictures, maps, graphs, charts, or diagrams that really demonstrate the material.

Other people are auditory learners, which means they do best by hearing someone else explain the information. In a collegiate setting, these people benefit best from a lecture in order to absorb the information. These students can best memorize things when they are told about them, rather than when they read about them. Auditory learners also benefit from interviewing, debating, giving oral reports, or participating in discussions regarding the material at hand.

Tactile learners are people who benefit from touching or manipulating things. These are students who would learn best by building something or doing it themselves rather than just hearing or seeing. For example, rather than reading or hearing about how an engine works it is best for tactile learners to put the engine together. These people like to participate in whatever it is they are learning about. Tactile learners benefit from drawing, playing board games, making dioramas or models, or following instructions to demonstrate something.

Global learners are people who like to be active while learning, and so what they are learning has to be presented in an attractive format. Games and group activities are very beneficial to global learners. Organization is not as important in learning as being engaged in the material at hand.

Analytic learners are detail-oriented as well as organized. These people like the requirements to be well established and clear, and they like to have a plan as to how the information will be presented. Lessons should be well structured and lead by a person in charge so that there are definite boundaries to the material being studied.

Here is a quiz to determine what kind of learner you happen to be.  While different learners have strengths and weaknesses, it is important for teachers to incorporate all of the kinds of learning methods into a lesson plan. That is why some academics will have both a visual presentation and an auditory presentation followed by a hands-on or engaging activity that helps the students understand the material.
