Learning Styles in Children

A04C0015

Everybody in this world is unique and has a different style of living, eating, sleeping, talking, etc. Similarly every child has a different style of learning and understanding. It is very important for parents and teachers alike to identify the learning style of a child and then teach the child in a way that best suits that child.

Most children learn either by seeing things (visual learners), or by hearing (auditory learners), or by doing things themselves (kinesthetic learner).

Visual Learner:

If a child is a visual learner, he or she will watch carefully the facial expressions that you make while teaching to determine how to respond. While teaching a visual learner, make sure that your facial expressions send the correct message to the child, positive or negative. Also, you will have to determine whether the child is able to understand your teaching by reading his or her facial expressions. Pictures and visual animations are the best ways to teach a visual learner.

Auditory Learner:

If a child is an auditory learner, he or she will be very sensitive to your tone and your usage of words. This child does not really have to look at you to understand things. Make sure that your pitch is soothing to him or her and you do not raise it, otherwise the child may assume that you are angry and will not be in sync with your teaching. If the child gains confidence in you, your teaching will keep playing in his or her mind like a tape recorder and he or she will hear what you have said again and again in his or her mind, even after the lesson is over. The best way to teach this kind of child is by tape recorders or equipment that requires him or her to wear a headset.

Kinesthetic Learner:

If a child is a kinesthetic learner, some part of his or her body will keep moving constantly. Make this child study by giving him or her specific directions, such as to underline key words while studying. One needs to make the child take an active part in lessons so that he or she can relate to the subject in a much better way and understand the logic behind it. If he or she has to listen, give the child something tactile to hold.

It is very important for the parent/teacher to identify a child’s learning style and than teach appropriately. Remember, if you know your children’s learning styles, you’ll be far better equipped to teach them, which will benefit them as they grow.
