Learning Styles in Children

trav-038 Children vary from one another in as much as their learning needs are greatly different. Some kids are fast learners while others take time to learn things and respond to various stimuli. To help address the problem of learning, there are now learning styles that schools and parents have adapted to help facilitate children’s education.

Learning styles were created to take advantage of a child’s strength and not their shortcomings. Children learn in different ways and there is no right or wrong method in learning. Parents must focus on the method to which their children respond more favorably.

Children usually respond more to these styles of learning:

  • Visual Learners
These children are noticed to learn more by sight. They learn new things by watching and imitating. You might notice that some kids are better able to do things after you’ve shown them visually how it’s done. Parents often notice that kids do the things they see on TV. This is visual learning and most kids learn faster this way.
  • Auditory Learners
Children who fall in this category learn more from hearing things. They retain information based on what they hear. Educational songs are often the best learning tools to use for these kids. Their memory responds more to music and poetry. This is why some kids can memorize songs and distinguish tones far better than others. It is also known that kids in this category have problems with their spelling because they do it phonetically rather than visually.
  • Kinesthetic Learners
Children in this category work best in the practical arts. They learn more by doing things for themselves rather than just watching. They are more hands on when it comes to learning. They may have trouble learning in the usual methods, and statistics show that 50% of these are secondary students.

Knowing which style your kids learn more from can maximize their potential. Their learning environment also plays a huge role in their learning process. Some individuals learn more in places like the library where it’s well lit and quiet, while others would probably have trouble studying in these places. They would prefer a loud environment and dimly lit rooms.

Find out how your children learn

As a parent, you must consider what type of environment they will respond to more. It would be foolish to force them to study in an environment not suitable to their liking. It is more likely that they will end up getting stressed rather than learn anything.

When looking for the best learning style you need to pay attention to your children. A good learning style for you may not be best for your children. You yourself have a specific learning style and your child will most probably have his or her own.

Considering all these factors, you as a parent should be able to determine the best learning method for your child. Knowing your kids’ learning styles can prevent a lot of emotional and psychological stress that you would not want your kids to experience.
