Learning Techniques

When considering the education of another individual, it is important to keep in mind that there are a number of different learning techniques, or ways in which information is consumed and processed. The main learning techniques are as follows: visual, physical, verbal, aural, logical, social, and solitary. In certain instances, these learning techniques may overlap or share characteristics. In all cases, it is imperative that an individual understand his preferred learning technique in order to ensure the most efficient transfer of information.
Visual learners tend to prefer seeing information with their eyes in order to learn. They need images or real-life demonstrations to process information. Physical learners, similarly, use their physical senses in order to learn—often by touching or feeling what they are attempting to learn. Verbal learners find that they process information most efficiently when they speak the information out loud or write information down. Aural learners learn best when information is conveyed in the form of music or other sounds. Logical learners use systems, relationships, and common sense in order to process information in their brains. Social learners require groups of individuals around them, such as study groups or a classroom discussion setting in order to absorb and process information. Finally, solitary learners are the opposite of social learners in the sense that they prefer to learn information by themselves in private—away from the company of other individuals.
In order to illustrate these learning techniques, consider a student attempting to learn the Bill of Rights in order to pass a Constitution class. A visual learner will need to read through the Bill of Rights itself in order to remember the Amendments. Somewhat similarly, a verbal learner will either need to hear somebody to read the Bill of Right aloud or will need to write out the Bill of Rights himself in order to process the information. Social or solitary learners will need to learn the Amendments in a group setting or by themselves, respectively. An aural learner would require the assistance of a musical composition such as the “Schoolhouse Rock” series in order to assist in the learning process. A logical learner, on the other hand, might need the Bill of Rights explained to him piece by piece in order to comprehend the true intent and purpose of the Amendments and how they fit into the rest of the Constitution.
Learning styles and techniques are very personal, and will often vary greatly from person to person. An instructor hoping to reach a student in order to convey a particular piece of information will need to keep this fact in mind when selecting a method of instruction. Similarly, individuals hoping to learn a piece of information will do well to understand their own preferred learning techniques in order to make the most efficient use of their own time and effort.
