Learning Technology

In today’s world, learning technology is a necessity and no more a choice. Not just technically qualified people but also common people come across technology in their day-to-day lives. Computers and electronic gadgets have permeated every household. In developed nations there are hardly any people who don’t use cell phones. Keeping abreast of the latest technology has become a norm today.

Everyone needs to be aware of the technological changes around them. Be it simple tasks like drawing money from an Automatic Teller Machine (ATM), payment of bills over the internet, or upgrading your anti-virus software, people need to have at least the basic technical knowledge. Today, people use the internet for a host of activities like staying connected using social networking sites, using email, reading news, and voicing their opinions over blogs.

There are several reasons why people would want to learn a new technology. Some may want to learn it as an aid to their career advancement; others may need it to complete an academic project or to complete a task in their workplace. People may also choose to learn a new technology out of curiosity.

Many would prefer to be tutored on latest technology, while others may want to learn by themselves in a self-paced manner. There are various avenues by which to learn about a technology. Students are taught in schools and colleges about computers, the internet, programming languages and systems, thus making them better prepared to assimilate technological advancements. There are various training institutes that provide technical training and short-term projects for learners. Needless to say, the internet has a plethora of information available for everyone. There are books “for dummies” on every topic, which even people with almost no technical background can easily follow. Then there are other internet sites which provide e-books for beginners, intermediate learners, and advanced learners at a price.

In the fast-paced computer industry people are required to keep learning new technology and appear for certification tests in order to stay ahead of their peers. Even non-programmers have to keep up with technological trends as systems are changing more rapidly than ever before.

Curiosity and ability are probably the only prerequisites for anyone to learn technology. Curiosity will keep a learner seeking information, while his ability will play a vital role in how quickly he grasps the technology.

While it may be easy to learn about a technology theoretically, practical implementations have always posed problems. One major problem one could face while learning a new technology is lack of proper guidance. Unless someone with some practical knowledge is able to help beginners they could easily become de-motivated and frustrated with the problems they encounter. That’s when we need the advice of a domain expert who has gained sufficient expertise due to practice and experience. However, not everyone wants to solve technical problems. Most people are just happy to know how to use it.
