Make sure that you understand the negative effects of Speed Reading

Speed reading is a method of reading which allows you to read and understand a great deal of information in a very short time. Most systems do this by teaching you to read whole sentences rather than individual words. There are a number of courses available, and one of the best known is Evelyn Wood. If you are employed in a profession where it is important that you read and assimilate large numbers of tracts, then you would find speed reading of immense help.

Learning to speed read can take a lot of effort and is not something that comes naturally. The way that you do so is to read groups of words at a time, rather than individual words. When you have mastered this technique, you then go on to read whole sentences and after that whole paragraphs. You also have to train the brain to remember the content of the article, since it is of little use to read fast without comprehension or retention. However, before you even contemplate learning speed reading, you must be more than proficient in reading in the normal manner. Speed reading is not for learner.

You can see that should you be in a profession where a great deal of information has to be read, understood and assimilated, this skill will rapidly shorten the amount of time you spend reading documents and this could easily lead you advancement in your chosen career.

Even if you are only reading for enjoyment, many would say that speed reading can improve that enjoyment by permitting you to read more in the available time.  I beg to disagree. You really want to absorb the nuances of the writing style when reading for enjoyment. The whole concept of speed reading precludes recognizing the finer subtleties underlying the words. I believe you would lose much of the author’s intent even though you would get the meaning and general concept of the piece. This particularly applies to the English classical writers such as William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens. In other cases, it is the words themselves that are important as much as the storyline. Once you have learned speed reading, it is difficult to read in any other way.

Please consider carefully your reasons, before embarking on a speed-reading course. Read (in the normal manner) as much about both the course, how much time it will take and the cost and the end results promised. Ensure that you will really benefit from speed-reading, and that it not take away your enjoyment of reading in the longer term.

Then, if you are still convinced that speed reading is for you. Go ahead and book an speed reading course. Enjoy it and have fun.
