Memory Exercises
There are some easy things that you can add to your daily life to keep your memory sharp and encourage your brain cells to stay active. These aren’t memory exercises that you really have to set time aside for, but they use your senses to stimulate your mind, which strengthens your memory. By using touch, smell, taste, auditory, and visual stimulations in your surroundings, you can keep your mind active.
Bright colors in your home, music playing, nice smells like scented candles burning or cookies baking, or browsing the Internet can enhance your memory. Animals can stimulate mental interest—when it comes to visual, tactile, and audio memory exercises a bird feeder near a window, a fish aquarium in the living room, or petting the cat can stimulate multiple senses, including touch, sight, and sounds.
Inviting friends and family over for board games, card games, and conversation can provide great mental stimulation. Jigsaw puzzles and crossword puzzles are typical memory exercises that you can do when you are by yourself. They help you challenge your memory as you try to think of words that you know or where certain pieces belong.
Try new things like cooking new recipes, trying new activities, or taking a new class. You can learn a new talent—learning new things are great memory exercises. If you try a new restaurant that offers exotic foods, your taste will stimulate your memory, trying to think of things you might have tasted in the past, or analyzing whether you like it.
Whatever memory exercises you include, just remember to make them stimulating to your senses and your brain cells will keep active and your memory will be enhanced.
