Remembering things, numbers, and people can be important in your day-to-day life. Your spouse asked you to pick something up and you can’t remember what it was. You can’t remember your pin number for your bank card. You just met someone and already forgot her name. Everyone forgets things, but if it becomes a serious problem in your life, you might want to find some techniques to help you out.

One idea is to write down what you need to remember. You might forget the list somewhere, but the action of writing down the item can ingrain it in your mind. If you are at work and need to remember something when you get home, put the list in your pocket so that when you get home and are emptying your pockets, you will see the note and remember what it was. Then if you need to remember to bring an item with you to work, set it by the door. If you are traveling and don’t want to forget anything, write it all down and post the list where you will be getting ready. Add to the list if you need to and cross things off as you pack them or complete them.

Another technique is to compare the item or person to something else. You just met someone named Jimmy and he is kind of funny so you think of Jimmy Fallon. The movie you just saw, “Did You Hear About the Morgans?” makes you want to have a drink of Captain Morgan.

If you have a list of items to remember, first number the list so you can remember how many items you need to remember. Then try to associate each item with something else. This way you will either remember the item or the associated item until you remember the whole list.

When remembering numbers, it is easiest to remember groups of 3 or 4 so if it is a longer number, try to break it up. You can also use association, like a year or the sum of the numbers. For example, you need to remember 757- 990-5409, Think airplane for 757, 9-9=0 for 990 and 5+4+0=9. Or if you need to remember 76528 and you were born in ‘76, then you just have 3 more numbers to remember. When choosing a pin number, look at where the numbers are and create a shape you can remember, like a diamond or plus sign. Remembering the motion of putting in your pin will help you remember the numbers.

There are a lot of techniques and exercises you can do to help with memory problems. Just putting them into practice will help you remember items a lot more frequently. There are websites that will give you tips and books that can help boost your memory. There are also games to exercise your mind. Just don’t forget to read the book or play the games.
