If your child is entering middle school, he is actually entering a crucial period in his student life. This period marks the transition or passage into adulthood. He will be facing many challenges in middle school as he will need to adjust to and learn about more practical knowledge, more mature reasoning and more detailed career study. In this light, he will need to acquire an effective approach to learning and reviewing information. He is likely to survive the demands of an increased schoolwork load only when he is equipped with all the necessary learning tools, skills and techniques. Prepping him up with his own survival kit will help him cope with this new academic adventure. One way of ensuring academic success is by including middle school study skills in that kit.

Surely, your child already has his own study habits that guided him through elementary school. All you have to do is improve his study habits and introduce him to more of the techniques that will help him acquire middle school study habits. However, there are certain factors that must be considered. For instance, you will need to provide him with an appropriate study environment. If your home does not have space for study rooms, make do with your child’s room and designate a study corner or study area. Arrange the desks and drawers and other pieces of furniture in a way that will give more space for the study area. Also, make a plan for how to organize the contents of the study area. Make sure that all resources such as paper and pen storage are close by and distractions such as television or even snack food will be out of the room. This is to help your child direct his full attention and concentration on his schoolwork.

Next, consider introducing your child to these simple, effective and practical middle school study habits:

Always keep a calm attitude. Calmness results in patience as in patience in reviewing materials. Keeping an open mind towards schoolwork helps dispel frustrations.

Pay attention in class. Notes provide structure to the classroom discussion; studying allows the information in the notes to solidify and stay in the memory.

Effective memorization methods. The use of mind tools such as mnemonic devices in memorizing lists and series of items has been proven effective in optimizing the capacity of the brain to lock in information. Techniques such as lists, flash cards and acronyms are some of the classic mind tools that are usually included in middle school study habits.

Work with others. Optimize learning potentials studying in groups. This way, each of the group members will be considered an information resource.

Practice essay writing skills. Essay writing skills are a commonly overlooked aspect of learning. Students can hone such skills through constant practice.

Focus on the areas that need more attention. Assessing the student’s strengths and weaknesses allows him to determine which aspect of learning he needs to spend more time developing or improving.

Developing effective study skills is a good move when preparing for middle school. Whatever learning skills or techniques are developed in middle school will be carried on to high school and college or to the real world. As a parent, you can only do so much in making sure that your child develops his needed middle school study skills to perform well in middle school. Beyond excellent academic performance, those skills and techniques will be extremely helpful in teaching your child to cope with life in general.
