I still remember my exams in secondary school. I will let you to decide how common this experience is.

On the Literature exam I was asked: “Have you read “War and Peace” by Tolstoy?” I honestly said that I have not. The response I received from my teacher was “OK, you have earned only a C”. In the government physics exam our teacher spent the time looking intently out the window, while the exam was being held. So basically all the students opened ...

Do you constantly misplace significant things such as your car keys? Do you often forget important dates like birthdays and anniversaries, thereby negatively affecting your relationships with loved ones? If so, don't panic.

Some time last year, I picked up a copy of a software program that would help me read faster. Having so many choices available to me, made the choice pretty difficult but in the end I choose a product called RocketReader, a Windows™ program that really has helped both my daughter and me read faster.

After the experience I had teaching our phone number to my son, my wife commented that she had seen several products that claimed to use mnemonics to teach the multiplication tables to kids. Did I think we should get one?

One of the very first things parents want their kids to know is their phone number. The problem is, many children have trouble memorizing and need extra help with the process. In fact, I have a very smart son who, when you ask him for an overview of a book he just read will give you tell you the whole story with all the details the book gave him. But, ask him to memorize numbers and you start to wonder if it is the same kid. It just isn't going to happen.

Then, I found a solution...

Second only to hot flashes, memory lapses are a common complaint of women going through menopause. How many times have you gone into a different room in the house and wondered why you were there, or opened the refrigerator door only to forget what you were looking for. Or perhaps, you forget the name of the movie you saw last night and the name of the person you were introduced to five minutes ago.

Many people who want to read faster, or at least remember what they read at a normal speed, have not mastered basic reading and learning skills. I'm not talking about being able to sound out the words on the page. I'm assuming that if you want to read faster, you can at least do that much. What I'm talking about are the skills that the top students in the class either have been taught or have figured out for themselves.

When I initially tell people I am interested in speed reading and that I have a web site related to memory and speed reading. One of the first questions people ask is, "Why?" Followed quickly by, "won't you miss something if you read faster?"

The reaction is understandable. If I'm reading at a normal speed now and I can't remember anything, or very little of what I read, won't reading even faster mean I will remember even less?

Some people can memorize things rather quickly. Others of us need help. The key method of being able to memorize things quickly is to involve as many of your senses in the process as possible.

When I tell people that I regularly memorize verses from the Bible, the typical response that I get is, “I could never do that.” The assumption, of course, is that they believe they SHOULD memorize scripture. They have just tried to do it and have found it difficult.

In our house, a couple of us can memorize something by just looking at it once. Others of us it could take months just to memorize three sentences. But, believe it or not, we have all memorized not just several verses but, several passages of Latin. I personally memorized the Pater Noster and have no idea what I’m saying other than the fact that I do know Our Father.

While the discussion that follows is centered around memorizing Bible verses, it is only because that is what I memorize. If you memorize scripts, poems, or multiplication facts, the principles still apply.

So, how do we do it?
