Online Learning Games

ge-gam-03 Anyone who has a child today knows the importance of making education fun and interesting for children. Teachers as well as parents have found many helpful places online where they can select from a variety of useful tools for teaching. One such useful item is online learning games.

Learning games for students have been around for a long time. The strategies applied in the games to reinforce through repetition various types of information have proven to be successful time and time again. The use of flashcards in the classroom is just one of the many items that have been successful in teaching games for students. Young people as well as children easily identify with picture characters. When a particular subject is combined with the fun and appeal of character involvement, the student is more easily drawn toward participating in the activity. Combine this with the excitement of a challenge and a goal to achieve and any student can easily become immersed in the game.

There are a wide variety of online learning games available in a host of different subjects. There are word games such as word scrambles and mixed jumbles to help teach spelling while using pleasant music, sounds, and animations to keep the student interested. There are more actively involved games such as shooters where the student needs to shoot at falling letters to create the correct word. There are online learning games that appeal to all types of students in all stages of learning. There are more advanced games such as Sudoku for older students as well as games that may be printed out and worked on later.

Educational companies know the appeal games bring to the student in terms of learning, and work to create different and interesting products for use in both the home and classroom. Fisher-Price even has an online site designed for infants through toddlers to play games and activities geared toward helping them learn. Online learning games are not restricted to just the young student. There are several sites available that offer challenging educational games for the college age and adult as well. Included among these are language games to help students and adults in learning a new language. There are also quiz games to help with things such as studying for the SAT.

With the video game industry being such a leader in gaming today, it would make perfect sense that the educational world would reap from the benefits of its attraction. What better tool for studying how history and the social sciences work then a hands-on game such as Civilization, where the player creates and is responsible for the success of his own world. When it comes to learning and retaining what has been learned there is nothing better than the actual experience. When this is combined with a reinforced, repetitive setting, the mind can’t help but absorb the information with which it is presented.
