With the advancement of science, new technologies have been emerging day by day. Pattern recognition is one such technology that has been serving multiple needs for today’s world in the areas of artificial intelligence, neural networks, cognitive science, biological research, and much more. Though studies and research were done about this technology long ago, the implementation took some years, since the use of this technology needed a proper system to work with. Now, with the development of many machines and devices that could make use of this pattern recognition, one can come across this technology in day to day life. For example, x-rays, which we are familiar with, use pattern recognition, and MRIs and ultrasound images also use this technology for identifying the disease patterns.

Pattern recognition is one of the widest research sectors that deal with identifying and recognizing patterns in data. It can be subcategorized as statistical pattern recognition and syntactical pattern recognition. The key usage of this technique is to classify different patterns of data through the help of some gained knowledge or by collecting and studying the statistical information of the pattern or both. Pattern recognition is applied in the areas of character recognition, speech recognition, and image recognition.

The working of a pattern recognition system cannot be briefed easily. We, human beings, naturally use some patterns that we have studied about some objects and we recognize those objects that we studied about earlier. This happens naturally in our brain. And in many other instances we forcefully gather information about objects in our brain for later recognition. For example, we can recognize every character of the alphabet or numeric system because we have collected the patterns of those things earlier in our brain. Similarly we can distinguish the difference between the faces we meet or know. This forms the basis for the working principle of a device that uses pattern recognition. Hence, the working of a pattern recognition system can be stated as a system that has a sensor that is capable of gathering the observed qualities of an object that has to be further classified. Simply, it is a mechanism that extracts certain features, which can be symbolic information from any observed object.

We come across pattern recognition technology in our life day after day without realizing it. For example, many people use speech recognition software, which can change dictated words into text. The input given to the computer through a human voice is recognized by the computer with the use of pattern recognition technology. Many of us are also familiar with fingerprint recognition, which follows pattern recognition for identifying a person by comparing different fingerprints that it has been already given as input. There are so many such examples of the use of pattern recognition.
