It’s good to have principles. This is true regardless of the activities in which we engage. However, it’s particularly important in the realm of learning and teaching. Here are some of the most crucial principles of learning and teaching:

1. The learning program is student-centered

The traditional method of education was teacher-centered, with the teacher’s role being to simply fill the student with information. We all have had at least one teacher who represented that approach to education. However, in a student-centered approach, the teacher creates a learning program that focuses on the student’s backgrounds, needs, interests, and so on. This is more of a problem-solving approach to education.

2. The learning environment is fruitful and accommodating

It’s important that the teacher creates an environment that is conducive to learning. The students should feel at ease rather than uneasy, thus creating an atmosphere in which they are constantly learning. Furthermore, the teacher should provide motivation that will further encourage the student to continue along his or her quest to learn.

3. Learning should become holistic and extend beyond the classroom

Learning should never be confined to a classroom. It’s important to take a holistic approach to instruction, which turns the entire world into a classroom. True learning isn’t restricted to learning facts and figures. Instead, it should allow the student to use his or her learning in the real world. In particular, the student should be equipped with the proper skills to engage in problem solving.

4. Assessment is a critical aspect of learning and teaching

When we think about assessment, we typically think about quizzes and tests. However, assessment can take on several forms. It can involve the teacher simply getting feedback from the student through questions. It can include homework assignments and projects. It can even include the student doing an assessment of him or herself. The key is to do assessment consistently, so the instructor can make necessary adjustments to his or her instruction.

5. Students are encouraged to think abstractly and to apply their learning

Learning Who, What, Where, When, and How has its purposes. However, this type of learning won’t be particularly applicable for the student. Instead, it’s important that the student learn to apply what he or she has learned, and learn how to think abstractly. Taking a problem-solving approach to education can achieve that goal. The student becomes equipped with the tools to evaluate a problem and then determine a solution.

6. The learning environment encourages independence, self-motivation, and interdependence

It’s important that a student learn independently and interdependently at the same time. The teacher should create an environment in which the student can learn by himself as well as with others. This will not only benefit the child in an educational setting, but also in the real world.

These principles of learning and teaching are the cornerstones of pedagogy. While it’s important to convert theory into practice through meaningful exercises, it’s also important to begin with a solid theoretical foundation. Learning and implementing these principles of learning and teaching will make your instruction meaningful.
