Student Assessment

The main purpose of a student assessment is to give teachers a general idea of how a particular student is doing via tests, quizzes, portfolios, and assignments. It guides teachers as to which method would most benefit the student’s learning. Along with aiding the teacher, the student assessments inevitably help the students thrive in their education, because they test their capability. There are different types of assessments that test different aspects of a student. The three types of assessments are diagnostic, formative, and summative tests.
Typically, the diagnostic assessment is a test that’s given to a student in the beginning of a course to test a student’s current knowledge or skills. Since students differ in certain characteristics and backgrounds, they also differ in their level of education, experiences, and learning motivations. The results of the diagnostic assessment prepare the student for future tests and assignments in the course.
The formative assessment tests the student’s current learning. Teachers are aided with helpful development activities that improve a student’s capability of understanding a concept. The student’s quizzes usually result in automatic test results, grades, and feedback from teachers. As well as the benefit of quick results and grades, students are also usually given a rubric or set of notes to assist with the quiz. Overall, the student should be given a good amount of sources to assist with the assessment.
The last type of assessment, the summative assessment, tests a student’s current grasp on a concept and level of progression. Typically, a timed quiz is involved. This test judges whether or not the student pays attention to classroom discussions and lectures. Summative assessment gives the teacher an understanding of the student’s direction in the classroom, and can alert the teacher’s attention to a particular student. Most tests are given in the format of multiple-choice. The student is usually given the answer key soon after completing the assessment, usually a couple days after the deadline. Otherwise, the student assessment is machine generated, and the machine automatically grades the assessments for the teachers. Either way, the student is given the results of the assessment for the use of a study-guide. In addition to multiple-choice, there are free-response questions. These are usually a lot broader and more difficult. They test extensively a student’s grasp on a concept.
In conclusion, the student assessment has been a tremendous aid for both student and faculty in the educational process, and has been deemed worthy to be an effective means of preparing the student for future tests. Since students are able to access notes, grades, comments from teachers, rubrics, guidelines, lectures, and projects, the use of student assessment has definitely brought the student and teacher together in a more positive learning environment.
