Student Learning Styles

"To each their own." That’s what a student learning style is like. Just like every person is different, so is the way he looks at, processes, and retains information. For educators, recognizing and adjusting lesson plans and teaching techniques to fit a student’s learning style can help that student get the most out of his or her education and make learning a fun, fulfilling process.

It can be hard to tailor a lesson plan to meet varieties of learning styles, but if an educator knows the basic learning styles and recognizes each student’s strengths and weaknesses, there’s no reason why every student can’t benefit from the way in which a teacher teaches. Some students may comprehend and retain information when it is presented in a more visual way. Other students may need a more hands-on approach. These can be worked into any teaching technique—because in the end, it’s helping the student learn and learn well that matters most.

The Auditory Learning Style is when the student learns best through hearing. They benefit most from lectures and classroom discussions about the subject matter being taught.

Analytic Learning Style is when the student learns best with more detailed information. They prefer to get information in an orderly fashion with facts and findings to back everything up.

Global Learning Style is when the student learns best when the educator uses intellectually stimulating ways to explain information. They tend to be spontaneous and thrive in on-the-spot classroom discussions.

Kinesthetic Learning Style is when the student learns best by touching or handling objects. They respond to more physical activity and need to involve their entire body in the learning process.

Tactical Learning Style is when the student learns best by actually handling, building or manipulating information.

Visual Learning Style is when the student learns best with sight. They tend to respond better to computer graphics, charts and other forms of visual aids.

Teaching is challenging and rewarding. The best educators are those who also learn about their students and the best way to help them benefit from the educational process.
