Study Habits
We could all use some study tips for success. Many people think that having good study habits is just common sense, but for others good study habits seem to be elusive. Where can someone get started if he needs to adopt better study habits? There are some basic skills a student must master to find the best way to succeed when it comes to studying.
One of the primary skills necessary for good study habits is time management. A good student knows how and when to study as he balances schoolwork, social life, and maybe even a job. Good time management starts with prioritizing. Students must assess all the tasks they need to accomplish in a day and then prioritize them. Obviously, attending class is a top priority, but there are many other demands that must be juggled. After attending class, the next top priority item should be time for studying. It all comes down to setting priorities and committing time to meeting those demands.
Avoid Procrastination
Putting things off seems to be standard operating procedure for many students, but it is also a road to disaster when it comes to studying. If a student puts off studying for too long for an assignment or test, he can find himself with his back to the wall and nowhere to go. Avoiding procrastination goes hand-in-hand with good time management and prioritizing. For students who have an issue with procrastination, the best way to overcome this pitfall is to review what you have to study and make a schedule.
Making a Study Schedule
Many successful students have discovered that setting aside a dedicated time for studying is the best way to meet the demands of their schoolwork. This could be first thing in the morning before the demands of the day have started or it could in the evening after classes are over. It could even be between classes when their schedule allows. Whenever it is, good students review their schedule and set aside a regular time to study. Some recent studies have shown that there are optimal times for studying, but each individual has to set in place a plan that works for him.
Finding a Study Space
For many students finding the right place to study is crucial. Finding a place that is free of distractions is important. These distractions could be televisions, the internet, or friends and family. For most students, this optimal study space is usually a quiet place away from people. Many students have found libraries the best place to study because they have rules in place that mandate quiet conduct. Other students like to study in coffee shops. The important goal is finding the right place that allows for undistracted time to concentrate on studying.
Breaking Down Tasks
Sitting down to study a large volume of material can be quite daunting, but the best strategy is to break down the material into smaller chunks and then to tackle it a section at a time. Learning theory states that we learn best by learning in small, discrete sections of material. Students do best to master a section of material and then when they feel comfortable take on the next section, until they have digested all the material.
