Study Skills Activities

Studying becomes a burden if we don’t do it with interest. Studying without understanding is of no use. Some may feel studying is boring and tough; some may not be good at typical reading and studying. One can do study skills activities in order to improve one’s studies and to remember lessons well.
Study skills activities are abilities or strategies applied for better learning and understanding, essential for acquiring good grades. Different activities are available but you need a plan. It’s a good idea to have a partner, say your classmate or friend, so that you both can help each other to learn and memorize lessons. The most important thing to keep in mind is the time management.
Study methods or study techniques are formalized processes of learning or studying. Several study skills methods are used to improve one’s learning skill. Some of the generally used techniques are discussed here.
If you want to remember something in a specific order or a list that goes with a certain word, try to create an acronym. For example, when we were in school we were taught to learn the colors of the rainbow by writing ROY-G-BIV. With that word you can remember the colors of the rainbow well. It’s easy to remember a set of things related or in a specific order this way. The acronym will remain in your mind forever.
Another method is the Black-Red-Green method. This method helps students to make sure that all possible questions are considered. This method consists of underlining different parts of the lessons with black, red, and green pen. Black denotes blatant points, things that should be clearly learned. Red denotes reference points from which some points can be taken, and green denotes gremlins, which are signals one might easily miss. By marking this way, students won’t miss any vital points.
One of the easiest ways to remember something is to memorize it as a picture. Pictures give us a clear expression of the study materials. For example, if one is studying about the Civil War and if one can imagine and store the facts in one’s mind as a picture, they will be easy to memorize. Have a clear image of the battles—how the armies were positioned, how they moved, etc.
Another method is to summarize a lesson. Break up the lesson into sections and write down the important points and try to summarize it. Study the summary well. Each point represents a topic in the lesson. In this way one can memorize the main topics of the lesson well. While summarizing you should make sure that you have understood the lesson well.
These are some study skills activities to help with studying. These activities will help one to develop one’s study skills and become better at studying. The only thing one needs is a little extra effort, and one’s grades will be raised.
