Study Skills Activities

Not all learners are cut out to be academicians. It is a joy to be with students who know how to study on their own and go through an educational level with flying colors. However, there are those whose intelligence is more directed towards the arts or sports so that they find difficulty dealing with verbal or mathematical problems in school. Is there something that can be done to help these individuals reach their maximum potentials in academic areas?

Fortunately, there are various study skills activities that facilitate learning for these students. The first area that should be very well planned pertains to study time. A special time should be set for studying so that the mind becomes accustomed to this routine and concentration is gradually developed. The best study time is not the same for all individuals. The trick is to find that perfect time when the mind is at its best condition. For some studying early in the morning can produce good results. For the night person, studying when the rest of the world goes to bed is the perfect time.

When this is done, then the individual can move to select the environment that is conducive for his learning. A quiet place can provide fewer distractions and could mean more focus. Studying alone in a room is beneficial for some students. On the other hand, some amount of music playing in the background can stimulate learning for other individuals. Group studies that allow students to interact and discuss with classmates can work well for certain persons.

The next thing to organize is the set of materials that needs to be studied. As such, having a table that is wide enough to classify the different resources is necessary to avoid confusion. In the same way, making a list of study goals provides a guide that can motivate the person once it is completed. This list should be ordered in such a way so as to give the more urgent and important ones top priority.

Memorizing is a part of the educational process in any level. Consequently, memorizing is a study skill that should be often practiced until it is mastered. For materials that need to be memorized word for word, reading them over and over again will stick them to the memory. For those that comprise very long and seemingly boring content, the key is to find a practical meaning to the material or to make an outline of the keywords.

Studying doesn’t have to be a serious activity all the time. There are numerous audio books that can be downloaded online and listened to while doing other activities such as eating, driving, etc. Some people are surprised to know that what they listened to can be recalled at the right time. Moreover, taking breaks in between study sessions is beneficial. This will help revitalize the body and the mind. Most importantly, a reward system will help reinforce a good study habit. These motivations are important because they help a person persevere in this endeavor.

So much can be done to make studying a pleasurable experience. Choosing the things that will suit a student’s learning style is of utmost importance.
