With so many distractions in the home – TVs, radios, computer games, the sounds of traffic outside and the general commotion in the home, children are likely to develop poor study habits and skills. As a parent, this poses a problem, especially if you’re getting too many letters from the school principal. Scolding the kids or withholding their allowances won’t help any. Now how do you solve the problem, if the kid is not Maria (with apologies to Maria Von Trapp)?

What are Study Skills and how can they be developed?

Studying is a skill. It cuts across several techniques and to demand that children learn how to study fast is a sure-fire way to kill any budding interest in academics. The greater demand to instill good study habits rests on you and you have to add to your repertoire of parenting the patience and the consistence in fostering good study habits that will last your children a lifetime.

Study gurus of the University of Waterloo outline courses that can shape up a student’s study habits. The entire program wades through topics such as learning and remembering, time management, reading, listening and note taking, concentration, preparing for exams, cramming, taking exams, and sleeping. Perhaps your children will take to sleeping faster than other techniques. But these strategies have to be scaled down or adapted to the children’s needs.

Start from the Beginning

For starters, get the school’s examination schedule. You can let the child put an X on the calendar to mark the dates. To remind small children that they have exams and schoolwork to do, the calendar should be stationed near the study table where they can conveniently see the calendar dates.

Make the study room conducive to study. Remove all distractions and provide tables and a comfortable chair and ample lighting. Show your child how to organize his study schedule and how to prioritize things. If he finds math difficult, let him give more time to it before he goes to the next lesson.

During the first study sessions, sit with your child and let him read out his school assignments for the next day. Encourage him to ask questions if there are things he cannot understand. Explain that doing homework is different from studying. So when he is done with his homework, let him go over his completed assignments.

Encourage him to take some notes during class lectures and show him how to use flash cards for spelling and math formulas. As he progresses, you can teach him how to understand charts and tables. As you go along, you’ll discover the study style that suits him, and you should capitalize on it. If he prefers reading aloud, let him; or if he wants his dog beside him, give in to the request.

Going back to the Waterloo outline, don’t forget to stress that sleep is essential for a good exam performance. Without enough sleep, he can easily forget most of the lessons he studied and his mind might just go blank when confronted with the test paper.

The ritual of grounding him on good study skills and habits may take time so be consistent and firm until your child can do the studying on his own. You can also tap his teachers and together you can create a good study program for your child.
