Student Assessment

The main purpose of a student assessment is to give teachers a general idea of how a particular student is doing via tests, quizzes, portfolios, and assignments. It guides teachers as to which method would most benefit the student’s learning. Along with aiding the teacher, the student assessments inevitably help the students thrive in their education, because they test their capability. There are different types of assessments that test different aspects of a student. The three types of assessments are diagnostic, formative, and summative tests.

Student Learning Outcomes

It is necessary for an educational establishment to monitor its students’ learning capabilities and objections, along with overall outcomes of what they’ve learned. Educational objectives are statements that describe the expected accomplishments of students during the first few years after graduation—usually 3-5 years. These objectives should be consistent with the mission and goals of the program and the institution. Educational objectives need to be assessed and evaluated periodically. This is generally done through alumni, employer, recruiter, and/or advisory board assessment. The objectives should be evaluated on a systematic basis to determine their continued relevance to the needs of constituents. These types of evaluations should be done every 3-5 years.

Formative Assessment

Successful teaching depends on figuring out whether students are learning both individually and as a group and also providing students with feedback on what they are learning. The process of doing this during a term or a unit of study is called “formative assessment.” Formative assessment is often contrasted with “summative assessment.” Summative assessment is assessment at the end of a unit of study or term, with the purpose of assessing a student’s total learning.
