What Is Mnemonics?
If you have to memorize a list of long, complicated names that make no sense, you’re not alone. A lot of people have to do this. This is where mnemonics can help.
What are mnemonics? Basically, mnemonics are devices that help you remember otherwise disjointed facts that might not hang together in your noggin for easy memorization. One popular mnemonic that helps you remember a month’s number of days, for example, is, “30 days hath September, April June and November. All the rest have 31, excepting February alone; which hath but 28 in fine, till leap year gives it 29.”

Cranial nerve mnemonics
Let’s say you’re in nursing school, and you’re going to have to memorize the 12 cranial nerve pairs. What you’d consider an easy mnemonic is going to depend on what you find easy to remember. Just Googling I found several mnemonics for the cranial nerves, some of which made me snicker. Now, that’s something that would jog my memory; I like funny stuff.

It all started when…
Well? When exactly did it start?
If we are all honest about it we have all really always been interested in learning how to remember things. But, for me, there is one day that sticks out as the begining.
I was in college at the time. At the beginning of one semester one of my professors told the class that the first student who could correctly name all of the students in the class, he would average an A into their grade.
So, we went around the room the first day and each of us stated our names. Then the opportunity came. “Can anyone name everyone?”
Of course not! I only knew of one person on our small campus of 1000 students who could name a class of 30 on one pass like that, and fortunately for us, she wasn’t in this class.

The fundamentals of memorization (Part Two)
Some people can memorize things rather quickly. Others of us need help. The key method of being able to memorize things quickly is to involve as many of your senses in the process as possible.
As was mentioned in part one. Consistent repetition is one of the keys to actually memorizing something. This is the most important and most neglected memorization technique. Especially by people for whom memorizing is easy.
Just because you can memorize something in 5 minutes does not mean you have actually memorized it for the long term. Often, people who can memorize something can get the passage or fact into "short term memory" easily but find that when they try to access the information a few weeks or months later, that information is not as memorized as they thought.

How I taught my kids their phone number.
One of the very first things parents want their kids to know is their phone number. The problem is, many children have trouble memorizing and need extra help with the process. In fact, I have a very smart son who, when you ask him for an overview of a book he just read will give you tell you the whole story with all the details the book gave him. But, ask him to memorize numbers and you start to wonder if it is the same kid. It just isn’t going to happen.
Then, I found a solution…
I decided to try mnemonics with the phone numbers. The trick is, you can’t use the same techniques we use to train adults. It has to be simple, and make sense. There are several possibilities. Some mnemonic techniques use rhymes. Others associate the shape of the letter with an object. I decided to use the shape method.
