Improving Memory Skills

If only our brains were computers then we would not need to worry about how fast and how well we could memorize lists and series of important information. All we would need is a chip or a new program to improve the way we acquire knowledge and speed up the process of retrieving information from our memory. But improving memory skills is actually tough work. It requires effort and time to achieve.

Cranial nerve mnemonics
Let’s say you’re in nursing school, and you’re going to have to memorize the 12 cranial nerve pairs. What you’d consider an easy mnemonic is going to depend on what you find easy to remember. Just Googling I found several mnemonics for the cranial nerves, some of which made me snicker. Now, that’s something that would jog my memory; I like funny stuff.

The fundamentals of memorization (Part One)
When I tell people that I regularly memorize verses from the Bible, the typical response that I get is, “I could never do that.” The assumption, of course, is that they believe they SHOULD memorize scripture. They have just tried to do it and have found it difficult.
In our house, a couple of us can memorize something by just looking at it once. Others of us it could take months just to memorize three sentences. But, believe it or not, we have all memorized not just several verses but, several passages of Latin. I personally memorized the Pater Noster and have no idea what I’m saying other than the fact that I do know Our Father. So, how do we do it?
Consistent repetition is the key. Even if you use mnemonic tricks to help you get going, if you don’t consistently review what you are memorizing, eventually you will forget it. If you are just trying to memorizing something for the school play, this may not be a problem. But, if you are trying to memorize something that you want to hang on to for life, forgetting it really isn’t much of an option.
fact, one of the problems of being able to memorize things quickly is that it tricks you into thinking that you have something memorized when you really don’t. You have it in short term memory, but if asked for it a month from now, you probably couldn’t even get the first line out.
about it, how many songs and commercials do you know verbatim? Did you ever stop to think why you know them? The reason is quite simple, you heard them over and over and over and over and over…. again. are several ways you can implement consistent repetition. Read the rest of this entry »
