Not all learners are cut out to be academicians. It is a joy to be with students who know how to study on their own and go through an educational level with flying colors. However, there are those whose intelligence is more directed towards the arts or sports so that they find difficulty dealing with verbal or mathematical problems in school. Study Skills for Children
With so many distractions in the home – TVs, radios, computer games, the sounds of traffic outside and the general commotion in the home, children are likely to develop poor study habits and skills. As a parent, this poses a problem, especially if you’re getting too many letters from the school principal. Scolding the kids or withholding their allowances won’t help any. Developing Effective Study Skills
Developing effective study skills is a problem most children and teens encounter. It is often repeated in schools that students must have good study skills to get ahead. A lot of students don’t consider themselves to have study skills or even know what they are. There are a lot of materials and seminars that are provided to help an individual develop these skills. If you go to the Internet and bookstores, there are literally thousands of books and articles that indicate how one can develop such skills.
So what are study skills and how do they become effective?

Effective Note Taking
Have you ever left church or a fascinating speech and said, "That was great!" Then someone asks you, "What was it about?" And your mind goes blank? The reason for that is that our memory mechanisms are imperfect. In fact, we only remember between 12% and 20% of what we hear. We retain only as much as 30% of the things that we see. If we combine hearing with seeing, that level jumps to 50%. Once we add discussion into the hearing and seeing equation, our retention jumps to 70%. We are still going to miss part of it, but we are doing a lot better off. These statistics are precisely why note taking is a skill that must be taken seriously.
By taking notes, you add sight to the hearing of the message being given. That still only leaves you with recalling half of what you were told. While you may feel like you have a terrific memory, you must accept the fact that it is probably not as reliable as you think. Various techniques of note taking can improve your ability to recall the information given to you and give you the advantage over most of America.
Here is one method that is particularly effective.
