Technology in the Classroom

The use of smart boards makes sense both academically and financially. Learning is occurring at an ever increasing pace, and there is a desire to have the most up-to-date information available when teaching students, so there is an ongoing need to meet these needs as economically as possible. A current technology that promises to help with all three of these issues is the so-called smart board, a large, computer-integrated screen that allows the users to both see and interact with the information on the screen.

Up until 10-15 years ago it was seen as acceptable for information to be slightly outdated in educational settings because it was cost prohibitive to replace textbooks every year or to provide individual computers to every student. It was also accepted that the information presented by the classroom teacher was sufficient because, again, it was completely cost prohibitive to bring specialists in for every topic even at the best universities. Although these constraints still exist, there is a technological solution that has begun to change the learning environment so that the educational possibilities of the students are no longer so limited. By introducing the so-called smart boards into the classroom at costs ranging from $4,000 for entry-level models up to $20,000 for auditorium-sized systems, the one-time investment is in line with the cost of textbooks and other resource materials that are used in the average classroom.

There are a great number of additional benefits to using the smart board for teaching, beyond getting the most current information. The teacher and students can use touch-screen technologies to work out problems on the board or move through different parts of a presentation. Through the computer link, students outside the classroom can view the lesson remotely. This is a huge benefit to smaller rural schools. Lessons take on a whole new dimension through live-action videos and recordings, making learning more fun and reducing bad classroom behavior. The smart board also allows students with limited motor functions to more fully participate. At the university level, research meetings between colleagues can take place from all over the world simultaneously, with every participant being able to show their work and evaluate the work of others. Experts who spend a great deal of time in the field can still teach via the smart board and communicate with students.

As the use of this technology grows, so will the new applications for it. Like most electronic devices, the more that are purchased the lower the costs will become, making it more available to even the smallest and poorest school systems. There are also a large number of business applications that will further drive advancements in this technology. To learn more about smart boards and to find dealers, just enter “smart board” into the search field of any internet search engine and you will find plenty of resources.
