Many people freeze when they have to take a test. Being prepared with test taking skills and tips can help all of us feel less pressure when taking a test. It can also help you complete a test within the allotted time. Here are some tips for taking a test.
• Have a positive attitude. When preparing to take a test, think positively. Believing you are going to do well on the test will help you stay calm and work through the questions without second-guessing yourself.
• Be prepared. Have all the supplies you will need with you when you take the test. Bring extra pencils and other supplies with you in case you have problems and need to switch.
• Be familiar with the test. If you have time, quickly look over the test when you get it to see what types of questions are on it. Sometimes you can get a practice test or example to see what the questions are like and if there are essay, multiple choice, or true/false questions. Also determine how the test will be graded.
• Read the directions carefully. The first step to taking any test is to carefully read over the directions, making sure that you understand how you are to answer and any specific instructions for taking the test.
• Read the questions carefully. Read through the entire question and all the answers before choosing your answer.
• Write neatly and use proper grammar. This is especially important if you are taking an essay test or short answer test, but it can be just as important on fill-in-the-blank or any other test. Make sure your answer form is neat and your answers can be easily read. If you are filling out a bubble form, make sure the answer bubble is clearly filled in and that you have no stray marks on the page.
• Move from item to item without wasting time. Answer the questions you are confident about first while moving quickly over the ones you will have to guess on. Once you have answered the easy items, you can contemplate the harder questions.
• Answering the difficult items: After you have answered all the questions or items you know, you have the time to answer those questions you skipped over. Sometimes clues for these questions can be found in other items on the test. Guessing is sometimes the only thing left to do.
