The fundamentals of memorization (Part Two)

Some people can memorize things rather quickly. Others of us need help. The key method of being able to memorize things quickly is to involve as many of your senses in the process as possible.

As was mentioned in part one.  Consistent repetition is one of the keys to actually memorizing something.  This is the most important and most neglected memorization technique.  Especially by people for whom memorizing is easy.

Just because you can memorize something in 5 minutes does not mean you have actually memorized it for the long term.  Often, people who can memorize something can get the passage or fact into "short term memory" easily but find that when they try to access the information a few weeks or months later, that information is not as memorized as they thought.

Just because you can memorize something in 5 minutes does not mean you have actually memorized it for the long term. Often, people who can memorize something can get the passage or fact into "short term memory" easily but find that when they try to access the information a few weeks or months later, that information is not as memorized as they thought.
Why am I repeating this? Because I want to make sure you are aware that repetition is critical before we move on and suggest ways that may aid you in getting the information into your short term memory easier.

If you are trying to memorize something simply by reading it to yourself over and over again, it is going to take you MUCH longer than if you read it outloud. One of the reasons that our family has been able to memorize what it has is because we are involving at least three of our senses at once in the process.

First, we are reading. This is rather obvious. But, it needs to be pointed out. The fact that we are reading involves the sense of sight. If we were listening to the passage instead of reading it, we would loose the involvement of this sense.

Second we are speaking. This actually involves two senses. We are not only speaking, we are listening too. We are actively involved with the material. If you are having trouble memorizing passages, I would encourage you to add the act of speaking OUT LOUD the passage while you are reading the passage.

Want to get more of your senses involved? How about occassionaly writing out the passage? One of the best tools I have found for memorizing passages is from a company called Laridian. Laridian writes a program called "Memorize!" for both the Palm OS and the Pocket PC. This program will do two things for you. It will give you immediate feedback as you "recite" the passage and it will involve your hand in the process of memorizing.

Here’s how it works.

You load a passage you want to memorize into Memorize!. When you are ready to test yourself, you can use any of the methods your hand held allows you to enter data and enter the first letter of each word in the passage. If you get the letter correct, the word will display. If you get the letter wrong, the PDA will beep at you. If you can’t remember the word at all you can click a button and have Memorize! show you the next word.

Besides the fact that you have now involved your hand in the process. Almost as good as writing out the passage. You now get immediate feedback, another critical element in beling able to memorize.

Here’s a little secret about Memorize! It was designed to work with Laridian’s Bible software. But, it is not limited to being used with Bible verses. You can copy and paste any text you want into Memorize! and use it to Memorize Anything.
