Theories of Learning

Cognitive learning is based on how the human mind processes and interprets information, depending on one’s learning environment. Societal demands play an important role in how we learn and retain information. Learning individually or as a group involves control over mind and, to a certain extent, body.

Many instances in history demonstrate the power of learning as a group in the behavioral pattern. Demonstrating the influences of one mind over many would be the example of a dictator’s influence on great masses of their subjects. Individuality or thinking on your own might create a hazardous situation depending on when or where you are living. Behavior in even the smallest of animals can be modified over a period of time. Learning about current human events and remembering those of the past can greatly increase one’s chance of not making the same mistakes and thereby reaping the unwanted consequences of incorrect reactions to an event or a series of events.

Creating mind control on individual bases, that is, our own thought processes, requires, first, understanding the why of our thinking and, second, how to change if needed. Early childhood learning plays an important part in this process of gaining the ability to trust, build confidence, and feel secure. Without these basic building blocks, our learning is stymied. Throughout the different stages of human development the need for positive learning skills changes. All of our senses are involved in the learning process.

Today as a result of technology our resources for learning have increased dramatically across the world; online learning has created unlimited information available on any subject matter, opening many doors that otherwise were closed to most of the world’s population. Discipline in the learning process is fundamental—without it a scattered thought process occurs and rational decision-making cannot be accomplished. Taking baby steps to the larger step of greater knowledge in whatever subject of interest is the pathway to mastering our ability and understanding. It is not that the subject becomes easier but that our knowledge increases and opens our minds to the subject.

Survival skills for a person living in a colder climate differ from those living in a tropical due to their basic living conditions; however how they process and relate the skills learned can be very much the same. Every day our skills of learning change because of age or through our living conditions. Our needs motivate us, so when our basic needs of health and security are met we can move on to belonging and love and then to achievement and self-esteem. We strive through the experience of education and training to achieve or solve the problem.
