Types of Assessment
Assessment is a critical aspect of learning. Through it, teachers determine whether or not their students really understand and grasp the concepts they have discussed in the classroom. As they keep pace with the applications of modern tools, such as computers and the internet, adjustments have to be made on the traditional methods of assessment. Now there are a number of schemes and strategies that are adopted to thoroughly monitor students’ classroom performance.
Purpose
Student assessment is a strategy that links the effectiveness of teaching and learning. As today’s educators modify their teaching methods with the integration of computer, internet or multi-media in their instructions, they determine the learning progress of their students through certain types of assessment. The results of these assessments will help the teachers find out what their students actually know, which will guide them in making the necessary changes to their learning strategies and in making instructional decisions.
Types
With regard to the integration of technology in teaching methods, there are three types of assessment observed: the diagnostic, formative, and summative tests. The diagnostic test aims to assess or identify the current level of skill or knowledge acquired by the students. This kind of test is usually done at the beginning of the course. Since students come from a variety of backgrounds, they are expected to come with varying levels of knowledge, skills, and experiences as well as learning motivations. The results of the diagnostic assessment test provide one effective strategy for preparing the students for the course’s requirements.
The formative assessment task is done on students to determine their current learning; the result will help the teacher outline helpful development activities that will improve their level of understanding of a concept. This type of assessment is specially designed to cater to the assessment of online learning environment.
The last type of learning assessment is the summative test. As the name implies, this type of assessment task tends to grade or judge the learner’s level of understanding of a concept or level of acquired skill for the purpose of progression or certification. This mainly involves a timed quiz. With regard to the design of the test, online learning management systems offer this kind of assessment via password-protected web-based applications. However, for technical and security concerns, online summative quizzes are not ideal.
Common Factors
While the different types of assessments serve specific purposes, there are factors that are common among them. All of them tend to use either computer-assisted or web-based quizzes or tests. Most of these quizzes are designed to instantly generate scores, grades, and general feedback on the learning levels attained by the students. In addition to computer generated tests and quizzes, tools such as instructional rubrics may be used. An instructional rubric is a one- or two-page document that contains thorough descriptions of guidelines determining the quality or performance of a learner, from excellent to poor. The material is commonly used in evaluating student reports, essays, projects, and overall classroom performance. When it comes to assessment quizzes, rubrics also provide a scoring rule for evaluating the students’ performance, depending on the criteria on which they are assessed.
