Types of Learning

When it comes to the types of learning, some people might claim there are as many as seven different learning styles. It’s much easier to narrow it down to the three most obvious, which are listening learners, seeing learners and touch or experience learners.

Think about how adults learn at a conference or seminar. Some can listen to a lecture and come away with a lot of knowledge, while others might fall asleep. A different group will react to a PowerPoint presentation, while the other groups will be bored. The final group will like class activities of role playing or trying it on their own, while others won’t be that interested.

This can signify how different teaching or training methods should be used in classrooms and employment training. Because the mind commits certain things to memory through the senses, it depends on which sense is the strongest. Some will learn more through taste and smell, when the opportunities arise. This can explain why some students or employees who sit through the same learning experiences come away with different levels of knowledge.

One way to detect what sense is the strongest is to listen to students or employees. When you hear, "I see you have done…" or "I hear you have done…" or "I feel you have done…" in conversation, you can get a good idea of which sense a person favors when it comes to learning.

For schools, this means a multi-attack method and for employers, it means that training should involve as many senses as possible to get the point across to a larger crowd. Because sensory stimulations are what stimulate the mind and the memory, it is important that you understand what sense is the strongest in those you are trying to teach or train.
