Ways of Learning

Memory plays a key role in learning anything; if you have the information but cannot retain it in memory then you are not going to learn very much. However, if you are having trouble learning it may not be your memory that is at fault—it may be the way you are learning.

There are five basic ways of learning and most people truly excel in one or another, although combining two or more styles often cements the information in your brain even further.

Verbal

Some people learn best through verbal instruction. These are the people you watched in school who took excellent, organized notes during class and got great grades even though they rarely studied. If you find yourself repeating phrases back to people in order to translate what they said into your own unique language you are probably a verbal learner.

Kinesthetic

These are the kind of people who need something in their hands to manipulate in order to learn. This kind of learner is not overly fond of theories and hyperbole because they actually like to see change; they would prefer to actually add two objects to two other objects in order to understand that two plus two is four. If this is your learning type, you had the most trouble in school and are likely a bit tactile as well.

Tactile

Look at tactile learning as touchy feely types. A tactile learner may take apart the VCR just to see how it all works together. These learners want to jump in with both feet and immediately try whatever it is you are trying to teach them. They make wonderful engineers and auto mechanics.

Visual

Where a verbal learner needs to be told about a new concept, a visual learner actually needs to see it. They are the ones who highlighted in their books and found the patterns on the paper.

Aural

This is the granddaddy of all the ways of learning—this type will retain everything! The thing that seems to set them apart from all the rest is the fact that their memory is something extraordinary. They may study like crazy to learn a new idea or fact, but once they do, it is written in stone on their minds and they tend to not understand why everyone is not this way.
