Ways to Improve Memory
There are many reasons why we increasingly become forgetful—advancing age, busy lives, brain disorders, and lack of focus, to name a few. Due to our declining memory, we encounter various problems ranging from accidentally losing our wallets in the taxi to missing an important business appointment. No matter the reason and the consequence, however, there are certain ways that we can improve our memory.
Be Healthy
Your memory resides in your brain. As such, you must maintain a healthy mind and body to maintain a healthy memory! There are many ways to achieve this goal, of which the most important are:
* Feed your Brain – It is said that the brain is the greediest part of our bodies, using up to 1/5 of energy sources. Therefore, you must feed it with foods rich in vitamins A, C, and E as well as antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids. Think carrots, spinach, broccoli, strawberries, fish, and nuts.
* Drink in moderation – Emphasis is on drinking one glass of red wine daily since grapes are rich in antioxidants. Otherwise, you end up failing your DUI test!
* Avoid smoking – It kills the neurons in your brain, thus making for decreased memory capacity.
* Get regular exercise – Your brains needs blood pumping through it, which exercise provides in abundance.
* Get adequate sleep – You must provide time for your brain to renew itself, which ought to improve your memory, not to mention your mood.
* Seek treatment for depression – Being depressed increases feelings of anxiety and anger, which take away the mental focus necessary to remember things. Physiologically speaking, depression adversely affects the hippocampus, which is the brain’s center for short-term memory.
Besides, being healthy means that you will have a longer life with which to make more memories! Let’s hope it is mainly made of the good stuff.
Visualize and Associate
Remember the time when you teased somebody about his/her features as they related to his/her name? Think "Molly Belly" for the girl named Molly with the big belly! Well, you can transfer such childish actions into adult pursuits, although in a non-verbal way this time.
First, you can visualize the things that you need to do and gather by associating them with fun situations. For example, you often forget where you place your glasses. You can visualize them eating everything in the proximity of wherever you placed it last even if they’re on top of your head, which is funny but effective nonetheless.
Second, you can play the name game, which is great for remembering the names of people you have just met. Just choose one unique physical feature in the person, then make a silly label for that person using the chosen feature and his/her name. Again, think Molly Belly—just don’t say it aloud, ever.
The important thing in visualization and association is that you are comfortable with it. Otherwise, you will only set yourself up for forgetfulness yet again.
All these ways to improve your memory, however, are only effective when you practice, practice, and practice them some more. Ultimately, you should be able to make an art out of remembering things. Just remember to keep yourself healthy so that your brain can be healthy, too!
