Ways to Study

Are you someone who seems to forget information almost as soon as it is given to you? There are several handy techniques for effective studying that also can be applied to basic remembering of facts. First, a person should always be alert and refreshed when attempting to learn or study a given topic. Mental clarity and focused attention are two elements that will go a long way in the area of remembering.

Whether you are studying in a classroom situation or just reading out of a book it is a good idea to take notes. You can begin by taking a quick look through the chapter or information you will be studying and making a mental note of the beginning, the middle, and the end. This is a tool used by people who write for a living and it allows the user to break down the information and see it progress through the stages in which it is given. You can also write these down to go over when you have finished your reading assignment. Another technique that is helpful is to write down some questions that pertain to the information you are studying. This way, as you read through the information you can look for the answers to your questions. The more specific your questions are the more information you will retain.

The basic concept behind techniques designed to help a person remember what they have learned is repetition. Think about how easy it is to remember jingles you have heard for advertised products. This is due in large part to the repetition. Writing down the same information you are reading over is actually a way of getting the information to your brain twice. Another way to study is with flashcards. On one side of the card you can write a keyword or a question, and on the other side the answer. Then you can use these at your convenience to study more often and to focus on more specific items. This technique is used a lot for learning different languages and has always been successful. It is also helpful in remembering information if you can associate the information with something that is easy for you to recall. This word association technique is used by people in business as a way to recall facts, figures and even the names of business contacts.

Similar to this is a technique called Suggestopia. Suggestopia was created by a physiotherapist and doctor named Georgi Lozanov in the 1970’s. The principles behind how it works are based on the mental workings of the brain itself. The idea is to stimulate the person who is learning by the application of positive suggestions during the learning or studying period. The purpose of these suggestions is to encourage the person to believe he can learn and understand the material that is given.

Along the same lines of Suggestopia is subliminal learning. There are several subliminal CDs or tapes on the market today that contain positive message reinforcement within a relaxing music track. These positive suggestions are not generally heard by the conscious listener, but are instead picked up at a subconscious level where they are more readily implemented into the person’s thinking. There are many teachers today who use these CDs in their classroom and profess to have had significant positive results from their use.
